Harutyun Khachatryan
“I affirm the type of my nation”

Film director Harutyun Khachatryan is one of the notable figures in contemporary Armenian cinema, recipient and winner of awards at many international festivals and founder of the Golden Apricot International Film Festival in Yerevan. He is a Distinguished Artist of the Republic of Armenia, recipient of several international awards and has been a selecting member of the European Film Academy since 2004. In 2007, he received the Award of Prince Klaus of the Netherlands, and in 2008 he received the CHEVALIER DE L’ORDRE DES ARTS ET DE LETTRES Medal of the Ministry of Culture and Communication of France. In 1981, he graduated from the Faculty of Film Directing of the Department of Culture at Yerevan State Pedagogical Institute, as well as film director Yuri Yerznkyan’s studio. In the early period of his career, he was a director’s assistant and director at the Armenian Documentary Films Studio and later HayFilmi Studio. Since the early 1980s, his films have attracted many and have become realities that present new Armenian cinema with their truth and sincerity. Khachatryan has also produced films, including “The Sounds of Our Neighborhood” (1981), “Hosting the Commander” (1985) with screenwriter and co-director N. Hovhannisyan, “Chronicle of An Existence” (1985), “Three Rounds from Yengibaryan’s Life” (1986), “Kond” (1987), “White City” (1988), “Wind of Vanity” (1989), “Return to the Promised Land” (1991), “Last Station” (1994), “The Documentalist” (2003), “Return of the Poet” (2005) and “Border” (2009).

Zhenya Nersisyan
“I play so that I won’t suffocate”

On one occasion, well-known actress, RA Distinguished Artist Zhenya Nersisyan said: “An actor doesn’t have the right to be unemployed. Even if he is not offered a new role, he has to find something to do outside of the theater because if he is not ready when the time and opportunity come, he will lose the opportunity to express himself.” 

The well-known actress has played numerousu vivid and interesting roles at the Yerevan State Theater for Young Spectators for 40 years. When she was compelled to move to London in 1993, she discovered “what she had to do outside of the theater”.

Armenian dance was reborn, became enriched and was shown in over 80 countries around the world through Vanush Khanamiryan. We present “Hayern Aysor”’s cultural commentator Levon Mutafyan’s interview with Vanush Khanamiryan. 

I had prepared the text of my interview with Vanush Khanamiryan and was waiting for an occasion to meet him, have him read it and give his consent. I was in no rush because he had told me that he was ill and I was waiting for him to recover. I called him two days ago, asked how he was doing and reminded him that October 31 would mark the 80th anniversary of People’s Artist Svetlana Grigoryan. Vanush told me he wouldn’t speak, but would attend the event, if possible. Now, he won’t be attending...I present only a small part of my interview with Vanush Khanamiryan since I wasn’t able to reach an agreement on the entire text...

Murad Janibekyan
The artist always has hope
Distinguished Artist of the Republic of Armenia, Murad Janibekyan is one of the most notable actors of contemporary Armenian theater. For the past couple of years, for inexplicable reasons, he hasn’t been creating and his last performance at the Sundukyan Theater was in 2003. Yervand Ghazanchyan
“The loss of memory leads to a distorted image of the homeland”
RA People’s Artist, recipient of the state prize of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, Professor Yervand Ghazanchyan is one of the great Armenian artists who builds a bridge between the past and present of Armenian theater through his presence. He has headed the V. Atchemyan Theater in Gyumri, the Sundukyan Academic Theater in Yerevan, the H. Ghaplanyan Dramatic Theater and the Theater for Young Spectators. He has also been the artistic director of the H. Paronyan Musical Comedy Theater for nearly 20 years. Ghazanchyan has also been president of the Union of Theater Figures of Armenia for 12 years...He is also the head of a family of actors. His wife is RA People’s Artist, recipient of the state prize Galya Novents, and his son is President of the Union of Theater Figures of Armenia, artistic director of the Theater for Young Spectators, RA Distinguished Artist, Hakob Ghazanchyan. His younger son, Stepan, who was popular and lived a short life, has left good memories in theater and music. Yervand Ghazanchyan’s granddaughter, Mariam Ghazanchyan, is an actress and has already participated in several international festivals and has received the “ARTAVAZD” Prize...

Vigen Stepanyan

Actor, director, playwright, composer, RA Distinguished Artist Vigen Stepanyan is currently one of the most well-known and distinguished Armenian artist whose works are also known abroad. His many roles, directing in different countries around the world and plays have made him very popular. Stepanyan will soon premiere the first act of his new play at “Hamazgayin” theater with notable Russian playwright Alexander Galin’s play called “Retro” at the core. “Retro” is a play that was put on at over 100 theaters of the USSR in the 1980s.
