Opening of international conference dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the Mekhitarist Congregation in Vienna
On October 10, the opening of the international conference dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the Mekhitarist Congregation in Vienna was held at the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. The conference was organized by the RA Ministry of Diaspora and was held with the participation of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences and the Mekhitarist Congregation in Vienna.
Attending the event were RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan, Rector of Yerevan State University Aram Simonyan, Father, Bishop Nathan Hovhannisyan from the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, scientists from the NAS Institutes of History, Language, Literature, Art and Oriental Studies, the Matenadaran and Yerevan State University. There to participate in the conference were Abbot of the Mekhitarist Congregation in Vienna, Supreme Archimandrite, Father Boghos Gotchanian, journalist Barbara Densher from Austria, Father, Archimandrite Vahan Hovakimyan from the Mekhitarist Congregation in Vienna, Father, Archimandrite Mesrob Topalian from the Mekhitarist Congregation in Lebanon, post-graduate student of the Yagelon University in Krakow Piruza Mnatsakanyan from Poland. 
In her opening speech, RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan mentioned that the Mekhitarist centers were also cultural, Armenological, scientific and educational institutions. Expressing gratitude to the members of the Mekhitarist Congregation, the minister praised the Mekhitarists’ role in the preservation of Armenian identity, as well as the development and preservation of Armenology and Armenian culture. Hakobyan mentioned that the Mekhitarist Congregation in Vienna had the largest collection of newspapers and Armenian coins, as well as the first Armenian tricolor flag. The minister also highlighted that the Republic of Armenia, which recently marked its 20th anniversary of independence, should provide its support to maintain the Mekhitarist Congregations in Venice and Vienna. 

Hakobyan awarded Abbot of the Mekhitarist Congregation in Vienna, Father, Supreme Archimandrite Boghos Gotchanian the “William Saroyan” Medal of the RA Ministry of Diaspora for his patriotic acts, and awarded journalist Barbara Densher a certificate of the RA Ministry of Diaspora for her pro-Armenian activities. 

Father, Bishop Nathan Hovhannisyan conveyed the welcoming speech and wish of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians. There to give their welcoming speeches were Father, Supreme Archimandrite Yeghia Kilaghpian and academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, doctor of historical sciences, Professor Vladimir Barkhudaryan. 

The welcoming speeches were followed by speeches on the “Past of the Mekhitarist Congregation”, “The History of the Printing House of the Mekhitarist Congregation in Vienna”, “The Collection of Armenian Manuscripts in Vienna and Tashyan’s Method”, “The Reflection of the History and Life of Armenians in Transylvania in the Studies of the Mekhitarists”, “The Mission of the Schools of the Mekhitarist Congregation in Vienna to Educate”, “The Reflection of Demographic Issues of Armenia in Hakovbos Tashyan’s Works” and more.
